Located on the cusp of Wisconsin's beautiful Door Peninsula, The Academy of Fine Art is dedicated to the highest level of instruction in classical methods of drawing and direct painting for students wishing to pursue careers as professional Representational artists. The objective of the Academy is to teach observation skills and sharpen hand/eye coordination.
The philosophy of the Academy demands the return to discipline in art, to timeless classical canons of beauty and to the study of nature as the foundation for great painting. Study at the Academy centers on the importance of drawing (particularly from the human figure) as a means to perfection in painting or sculpture.
Curriculum
The curriculum includes drawing from nineteenth century Bargue lithographs, figure drawing, cast drawing, figure painting in oil and watercolor, sculpture, plein air landscape, still life and portraiture.
Students of the Academy undertake a concentrated and individually structured curriculum. Individual objectives for each session will be clearly stated before the period begins. Students will be assigned to an appropriate curriculum and move to progressively more difficult and challenging assignments upon satisfactory completion of the preceding assignments.
"Our goal in fashioning our curriculum is to continually challenge each student yet not overwhelm them. This requires us to regularly and thoroughly observe and analyze each student's skill level and progress. This will maximize the development of each and every student." -- Craig Blietz, Instructor.
The Academy is held in four eight-week periods with a three-month summer break. Models are provided Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons, Thursday evenings and Saturday afternoons.
Faculty
Molly Johnson, Owner and Executive Director
Owner and Executive Director of The Academy of Fine Art, Molly Johnson creates and teaches in oil and watercolor mediums, enjoying how each offer different challenges and disciplines.
Having been trained at The American Academy of Art, Chicago and The Academy of Fine Art, Molly's strong educational background gives her a solid understanding of the subject matter yet her works possess a sensitivity of captured moments that engage the viewer.
Johnson lives in Northeast Wisconsin where subject matter abounds. She often paints the farmlands, small towns and beautiful scenes along the shores of Lake Michigan.
Aside from being the owner and Executive Director of The Academy of Fine Art, Molly teaches watercolor and oil painting for Northeast Wisconsin Technical College and fine art classes for all ages in her studio. She actively participates in events sponsoring the growth and availability of the arts for all people. Johnson accomplishes this through volunteering on boards and committees and donating her artwork to raise funds for various causes.
Molly is honored to have shown in the 2009 and 2010 Oil Painters of America National Exhibitions, the Transparent Watercolor Society of America National Exhibition, and the 2010, 2011 and 2012 Richeson75 International Portrait/Figure Exhibition featuring her watercolor and oil figures. She participates in many juried shows and her works hang in public and private buildings throughout the United States. In 2010, Johnson was published twice in the American Art Collector Magazine along with two feature stories in the Green Bay Press Gazette.
She is a member of the Wisconsin Watercolor Society, the Transparent Watercolor Society of America and The Oil Painters of America.
Lori Beringer, Instructor
An impressionist, known for her landscapes, still-lifes and portraits that capture a joyous celebration and a deep reverence for the blessings of each day. Her oils express a sense of excitement and energy that come from the intimate exchange of her surroundings.
Although largely a self-taught artist, Lori credits Russian, European and American artists such as Joaquin Sorolla, Nicolai Fechin and John Singer Sargent as influence for her bold vibrant style. She has studied with Daniel Gerhartz, Albert Handell, Ann Templeton, among others.
Lori paints plein air (from life) throughout the year, primarily in Wisconsin where she was born in 1958. Her travels have taken her to various painting locations within the states along with Mexico and France. Painting on site and experiencing the culture create a timeless sense of place in her work.
Lori is a founding member of the Plymouth Art Center, which was formed in 1993 and currently has over 500 members. She is also a member of Oil Painters of America.
Craig Blietz, Instructor
Craig Blietz lives and works in Northeast Wisconsin. He is best known for his rural and agrarian inspired imagery, primarily that featuring domestic farm animals. Blietz's work presents a surreal interpretation of animals in the 'pastoral scene' suggesting much about the relationship of the animals to one another and the resulting parallel to human behavior.
Blietz received a BS from The University of Denver. He continued his art and design studies at The Harrington College of Design and finished his formal studies with four years of academic training at The School of Representational Art. Blietz studied privately with master draftsman and recognized Chicago figurative artist Fred Berger. Along with Mr. Berger, Blietz studied with recognized Chicago portrait artist Richard Halstead, and also with painter, printmaker, and illustrator John Rush. Several extended trips to the art centers of both Europe and the United States, with the sole purpose being the study of the great masters, has added to Blietz's extensive education.
Blietz's work has been exhibited in venues such as The Fort Wayne Museum of Art, The Charles Allis Art Museum, The Rahr-West Art Museum, The Wright Museum, The Miller Art Museum, Muskegon Museum of Art, West Bend Art Museum, Racine Art Museum/ Wustum Museum of Fine Arts, and The Elmhurst Art Museum to name a few. Craig Blietz is represented by Edgewood Orchard Galleries in Fish Creek, Wisconsin, Tory Folliard Gallery in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and Button-Petter Gallery in Douglas, Michigan.

Dale Redpath, Cyd Wicker Email: mail@TheAtelier.org Website: http://www.theatelier.org/ 1681 East Hennepin Avenue Minneapolis, Minnesota 55414 United States Phone: (612) 362-8421
Dale Redpath and Cyd Wicker, Co-Directors and instructors at The Atelier, each studied under Richard Lack at Atelier Lack for five years. After completing their training, they taught with Mr. Lack for a combined seventeen years before taking over the program following his retirement from teaching in 1992. The Atelier Studio Program of Fine Art offers a 4-year apprentice program taught by the co-directors along with graduates Kim Monahan, Laura Tundel and Lynn Maderich.
The Atelier Studio Program of Fine Art focuses primarily on teaching fine draftsmanship and painting skills leading to the creation of well constructed artwork. The Atelier has passed on from teacher to student, a method of instruction which melds formal academic training with influence of the French Impressionists. American art students in the late nineteenth century European art academies brought this combined education home to pass on to their own students. A portion of The Atelier's educational lineage is as follows:
- Jaques-Louis David (1748-1825)
- Paul Delaroche (1797-1856)
- Jean-LÈon GÈrÙme (1824-1904)
- William McGregor Paxton (1869-1941)
- R. H. Ives Gammell (1893-1981)
- Richard F. Lack (1928-present)
Enrollment in the four-year, full-time apprentice program is limited to twenty students. The students benefit from the Atelier's tradition of individualized instruction. Classes meet five days a week from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Monday through Friday. The students spend the morning hours drawing and painting from live models. The afternoon curriculum is tailored for each student according to their level of proficiency.
Private studio space is provided for everyone enrolled in the full time program. First year student work consists of drawing and painting from casts. Second year they move on to still life painting and composition. Third year students work on portraiture and continue to refine their still life painting skills. The fourth year is devoted to portraiture and interiors. Those students who wish to continue their Atelier experience and benefit from an optional fifth year are encouraged to create more complex interiors and delve into imaginative painting.
Part time and evening classes as well as Summer, Fall & Spring workshops are offered for those students who wish to benefit from the experience of The Atelier instruction, but are unable to participate in the full time day program.
The Atelier Studio Program of Fine Art is located in Minneapolis close to the University of Minnesota and on a bus line. There is plenty of free parking in the lot adjoining the building. The Atelier occupies approximately 7,500 square feet and has very large windows facing north and east. The figure drawing room has a skylight for natural lighting in the day and artificial lighting for use in the evening.
The Atelier is a non-profit studio fine art program devoted to re- establishing the high standards of traditional craft in drawing and painting. It is open to all who qualify regardless of race, color, creed, sex, or national origin. We are looking for serious students who have as their goal the career of a professional painter.

Mission StatementThe ultimate goal of the CAS is to provide artists with an education that allows them to pursue and produce an art that serves the public, elevates society and reestablishes the standards of art as a visual language that can be understood and felt beyond any boundaries. It is our belief that craft precedes artistry, knowledge precedes inspiration, observation precedes invention and a process-based art always yields a higher standard of work. Curriculum and Studio EnvironmentThe Center for Academic Study and Naturalist Painting (CAS) is an answer to the growing need that a number of students find when seeking out traditional Academic Art instruction. This Academy teaches the same Classical techniques and methods of drawing and painting taught in the schools of 19th Century Paris. In an extremely regimented environment, students learn how to observe nature with a high degree of accuracy. The structure of the course allows for students to progress at their own rate of learning with no time constraints, grades, or due dates to contend with. Critiques are given daily to ensure that the students understand and become intimately familiar with the methods of seeing and interpreting a subject. In such a strict and organized learning environment, the rate of student progression is dramatically hastened. Students quickly develop discipline in drawing by expecting more from their work with raised awareness and standards. Over time, they gain the ability to self-critique - a skill necessary for any working professional. Students are taught individually in a group environment and can expect daily one on one critiques. The curriculum at the CAS includes lessons in Copy Drawing, Cast Drawing and Painting, Figure Drawing and Painting, Portrait Drawing and Painting, Still Life Painting, Landscape Painting, Artistic Anatomy, Art History, Theory, and Composition. Students will also have access to local museums, which will allow them to create copies of master paintings as part of their studies. Enrollment is open to all interested students. Classes run year round and there are no deadlines for applications. Students are integrated into the curriculum at the beginning of each month. Students looking to complete the drawing and painting programs can expect a 3-4 year time commitment. For those who complete these programs and decide to stay at the CAS, there is a more advanced program that will focus on composition and narrative, especially multi-figure narrative and historical narratives. THE HARLEM STUDIO OF ART: The NYK ACADEMY & the ATELIER CANOVA
Andrea J. Smith; President, Director and Instructor (Rome). Judith Kudlow; Director and Instructor (New York).
HISTORY: The Harlem Studio of Art was established in November 2002. It is a collaboration of Andrea J. Smith and Judith Pond Kudlow, based upon their mutual appreciation of classical art and
their conviction in the importance of classical training to the contemporary painter. Both Andrea and Judy are practicing professional artists and therefore enjoy the positive
interaction which results from sharing their time and their work space with their students. Over the years, the HSA has grown to encompass three schools; The Janus Collaborative (New York), the NYK Academy (New York), and the Atelier Canova (Rome, Italy). The philosophy and
curriculum of the NYK Academy and the Atelier Canova are derived from the same source and can be described in a similar way. As schools, the introductory course focuses on the current revival of a nineteenth century drawing course, "Cours De Dessin".* As studios, the space is designed in such a way that the student area is located next to the personal working spaces of the two instructors. This gives the students the opportunity to
be part of the painting process of the artists working nearby, as they share their knowledge and talents with the students... the spirit of a true atelier. *"Cours De Dessin- The Charles Bargue Drawing Course", (please refer to the Gerald M. Ackerman and Graydon Parrish publishing, "Charles Bargue with the Collaboration of Jean-Léon Gérôme" ACR edition, 2003).
CLASSES: The formal course is primarily a drawing course, and is an adaptation of the training Smith received at the Florence Academy of Art. After these introductory exercises are
satisfactorily completed, the students move on to a series of drawings from the cast, initially in charcoal and concluding with charcoal along with white chalk highlights. The drawing
program is then completed with a grisaille painting. This is a translation of the original charcoal and white chalk drawing, into a black and white painting. After this point, the skills acquired through the drawing course are then applied to paint. Subsequent projects include exercises and instruction on "limited palette" painting-
through still life painting- and eventually, figure or portrait painting in full colour - with an "extended palette". The program is designed to help students to train their eye and sharpen their perceptive skills through rigorous drawing. It is only through a thorough understanding of tones and a
value range that one can move on to the challenges posed by the introduction of colour. After following this systematic course, the students are equipped with the necessary skills
which enable them to attempt larger and more ambitious compositions once they begin working on their own projects.
Master's Program: Students who have completed the drawing and painting program may apply for admittance to the Masters Program. They are given a small studio where they develop their own work under the supervision of the faculty. They will also be guided in professional development covering all aspects of the businesss of art, including gallery representation. LOCATION: The Harlem Studio of Art has two enviable locations. The NYK Academy is located in an 1800 Square Foot loft in hip Spanish Harlem, lit by large north facing windows. The Harlem Studio of Art's newest location is in Rome, Italy. "ATELIER CANOVA", is situated in the city center just a few blocks from the Spanish Steps and the legendary, Via
Margutta known for it's antique shops and art galleries. It is on the second and top floor, of the historic building where famed nineteenth century sculptor, Antonio Canova once
worked. It also has perfect north-lit windows and a skylight allowing it to comfortably accommodate small, intimate classes, typically consisting of 5-8 students. The course is based
on exactly the same HSA/NYK curriculum, although there is now a condensed "fast-track" option available. However this course must be approved by the Directors and a portfolio is
required. INSTRUCTORS: Andrea J. Smith, a native of Australia, studied and taught for seven years at the Florence Academy of Art, in Florence Italy. Her work has been widely exhibited in Australia, Europe
and America. Smith is represented by the prestigious Forum Gallery in New York. For more information and images of her recent NYC exhibition, please go to href="http://www.andreajsmith.com" target="_blank"> www.andreajsmith.com or www.forumgallery.com. Judith Pond Kudlow is a very experienced painter and has her work in collections across America. She is currently represented by Anderson Fine Art Gallery in St. Simon's, Georgia.

 | The Igor Babailov Institute of Realism | |

The schoolís level of instruction is designed for art professionals and art students. The institute offers several 3-day workshops during the academic year. The studies are based on working with live models. Highly individualized attention is given to the students so therefore the workshop sizes are kept to a minimum of 10 students.
The institute also features ìopen houseî days (to be announced), where attendees have an opportunity to watch Mr. Babailovís remarkable demonstration of painting a full of character portrait within three hours.
Many contemporary schools offer portrait and life drawing classes and the students enter these stages without having acquired a knowledge of anatomy, so they have been taught to draw the ìmaskî without knowing whatís underneath. At the institute, anatomy lessons are ever present and woven into the instruction so that the student incorporates this knowledge into their artistic skill.
The focus of studies is ìthe portraitî ñ the most complex and challenging form in realistic art, which is an ìessentialî for the strong artistic skill. According to I. Repin, ìIf you can draw a portrait, you can draw anything.î
Another characteristic feature of the instituteís studies is a concentration on developing and improving the skill of drawing, which is essential in the painting as well. That incorporates the knowledge of impeccable composition, perfect proportions, and the right perspective with the proper foreshortenings. And of course, the indispensable chiaroscuro.
The course of study will cover different aspects of fine art education, including mural painting, which is traditionally recognized as the highest achievement of the artistic expertise.
Mr. Babailov shares his knowledge and experience of working with a limited number of colors on his palette, just like the Old Masters did.

The Michelangelo Project™
Debuts National at Lausanne Collegiate School
Within its rigorous college preparatory program, The Michelangelo Project™ is now offered to Lausanne's 7th - 12th grade students. Lausanne Collegiate School is the first school in the nation to offer this program which introduces a European Atelier long term curriculum. Kathryn Manzo, a realist painter who specializes in commissioned portrait, still life, and landscape paintings, has created this program to train young artists in the craft of drawing and painting to the highest technical level possible. It focuses on the development of keen observation with a critical eye, and the necessary methods to draw or paint that which is observed.
Students study in the centuries-proven classical tradition of past masters. The education is similar to a master-apprentice education, and is the same training pursued by artists William Merritt Chase, John Singer Sargent, Edgar Degas, William-Adolphe Bouguereau and James McNeill Whistler, just to name a few. School day workshops offer a sampling of techniques, and an after school program is available for 7th - 12th graders who are seeking serious in-depth study. The training is individualized in nature and addresses the unique needs of each artist. Ms. Manzo users this analogy, "Just as studying in a music conservatory allows a student to focus on the study of one instrument more than a general core curriculum music class, The Michelangelo Project™ allows a student to focus extensively on classical drawing and painting more than a core curriculum art class. Both are necessary for artistic development."
In its initial fall semester phase The Michelangelo Project™ was offered exclusively to Lausanne students. With that session successfully launced and in an effort to share this unique program with the community, the spring session will be open to all area 7th - 12th grade students who are interested in serious art study. Students will be accepted on a first come/first served basis until all openings are filled. The ten week term begins January 13. For more information, check out the website www.lausanneschool.com/michelangelo or contact Ms. Manzo at 474-1032.
Ms. Manzo is well respected amongst her peers and connoisseus for her exceptional technique and knowledge about the craft of painting. Her articles have appeared in professional publications. In New York City, she taught at Parsons School of Design, as well as privately, and currently teachers in Memphis, TN where she is a founder of The Contemporary Realist Academy. She received a BFA in design from FIT/SUNY, studied science at Hunter College/CUNY, and studied painting in Franced at the Ecole Albert Defois and in New York City at The Art Students' League, The New York Academy of Art and the Atelier Aviano. Her studio is located in Memphis, TN. Her academic lineage can be traced back to Bouguereau and Michelangelo himself.
