The School of Representational Art (SORA) was founded by artist and instructor, Bruno Surdo and is located in the artistic River North area of Chicago. The school was established to bring the great painting tradition of the Old Masters to a new generation of artists. SORA's link to this heritage is through Richard Lack and his school of classical realism, which stretches back to the great academic and impressionistic painting schools of the 18th and 19th centuries.
At SORA, students work in an atmosphere of collaborative learning and are encouraged to engage with one another throughout the highly structured curriculum. The instructors and students are dedicated to working in and preserving the specialized tradition of representational painting. Through intensive and personalized critiques, art students are thoroughly trained in drawing and painting, color theory and craftsmanship. Lectures in anatomy, perspective, and composition round out the student's education. Composition is especially stressed as a critical component of the art curriculum.
Full time students attend the school Monday through Friday 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Tuesday through Friday mornings are dedicated to life drawing from the model. The afternoons and Mondays are designated to individual projects. Part time student admissions to the day program are available under special circumstances after admission interview. Additional workshops are scheduled throughout the year.
